Police arrest a person attempted to bribe an OIC to get a NTJ suspect freed

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – A person has been arrested for attempting to bribe a police OIC to obtain bail for a suspect of the National Thowheed Jamaath (NTJ) who is under custody.

The person has been arrested during an attempt to offer a Rs. 500,000 bribe to the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Horowpathana Police station.

The NTJ member, Abdul Majeed Mohamed Niyaz, was arrested by the Horowpathana Police on the 28th April and was remanded until 14th of this month. The suspect said to have been directly involved in the bomb attack on Shangri-La hotel on Easter Sunday.

Mohammed Shifan, a 26 year old, who is said to be a close accomplice of Niyaz had agreed to give the Horowpathana OIC a bribe of Rs 500,000 to get Niyaz unlawfully released when he was produced before the courts.

The OIC had informed the Bribery Commission and accordingly, Mohamed Shifan was arrested this morning when he was handing over Rs. 250,000 to the Horowpothana OIC as an advance.
