(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Revolutionizing Sri Lankan railway history, 10 railway container carrier wagons and five fuel transport containers arrived at the Bandaranaike Terminal at the Colombo Harbor today on board cargo ship MIIKE PANAMA.
According to Sri Lanka Development News, at present, the number of container carrier wagons owned by the Sri Lanka Railways is 25 and the number of fuel tankers is a low 160.
In order to increase the fleet, 20 container carrier wagons and 30 fuel transporting containers are imported under the Indian Line of Credit. Under the first stage, 10 container carrier wagons and five fuel tankers were imported.
Value of each container carrier wagon that can transport 40 foot containers is US$ 84,200 (approximately Rs. 15 million) and each fuel transport container that can carry 45,000 liters (10,000 gallons) of fuel is valued at US$ 85,500.
The last time oil tankers imported were in 2008 from Pakistan.
The Department of Railways earns 2% of its annual income from container transport and 22% from fuel transport.
