State sector to employ 15,000 graduates – Akila Viraj

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The government will recruit 15,000 graduates to the public sector on August 1, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam announced yesterday. “Five thousand of these teachers will be appointed as teachers to government schools,” the Minister said.

He was addressing the national ceremony to launch the initiative for free provision of a free glass of milk to primary school students.

The Minister said that during the past few years a number of initiatives were taken to uplift the Education sector. These include the ‘Nearest school is the best school’(Lagama Pasala Hodama Pasala) programme, Suraksha Insurance scheme, 13-year compulsory Education programme and many other programmes which ensured the development of the country’s human resources,” the Minister added.

Minister Kariyawasam said that many children attend school without having their breakfast and this programme which provides a free glass of milk was a move to address that need.

“Many students from rural areas face nutrition issues and we have already implemented another project to provide a free meal to them,” he said.

“When the present Government came to power 60% of the schools had electricity. But now, 98% of schools have benn provided with electricity.

We have provided 3,000 mobile laboratories and 40,000 toilets for schools. Many more physical facilities have been supplied for the advancement of the Education sector,” he added.
