(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Minister of Agriculture, Livestock Development, Irrigation and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development P. Harrison says that the gazette notification to increase the guaranteed price for paddy will be submitted tomorrow to the Cabinet for approval.
The Minister said that the price of paddy has not been revised in relation to the cost of production to the farmers and the price will be increased after four years.
The purchased price of a kilogram of Samba rice which was sold at Rs. 41 will be increased to Rs. 46 and a kilo of Nadu rice will be increased to Rs. 43 from Rs. 38, according to the Minister.
The Minister disclosed this at an event in Kurunegala held under the patronage of the Prime Minister to award compensation for the farmers who incurred crop losses in the Kurunegala District. At the event, Rs. 140 million in compensation were paid for 950 farmers in the District.
