(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Officers attached to the Kurunegala police in a special search operation detected a T56 gun and a bulk of gun parts from the house of one of the two Army soldiers, who were arrested along with another T56 gun and a gun magazine in Kurunegala on Saturday night.
The arrest was made by the police at the Gowa Kotuwa junction area, while the suspects were traveling on a motorbike around 11.30 p.m. The motorbike has been taken into police custody.
Police found a T56 gun, an Air Riffle made in Italy, a riflescope, empty 12-bore gun bullets, two army packs, two belt orders, one helmet, two water bottles, one waist belt, one cap, mess tin, one oil bottle, one magazine holster, seal, two bags and several other item from one soldier’s home.
He is Thushara Chandimal (46) of Dahigamuwa, Kurunegala and is a soldier of the Buttala Army Camp. The other arrestee is Chaminda Sirijayalath (37) of Hanwella, Kudagalgamuwa and is a soldier attached to the Wijayaba Infantry Regiment of Wathupitiwala.
The suspects were being interrogated on a 48-hour detention order obtained from the Kurunegala Magistrate Courts.
Kurunegala Police are investigating.
