Ten office trains operate despite strike

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –State Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Ashoka Abeysinghe says that 10 office trains were added to the service this morning despite the strike.

Six trains operated this morning from the Maho Junction, Kurunegala, Chilaw, Galle, Kandy, Rambukkana and Avissawella to Colombo Fort.

More than 20 retired railway station masters have joined the service on a daily contract basis, the Minister said. He added that instructions have been given to operate a special bus service near railway stations.

Meanwhile, the indefinite strike launched by the Railways trade unions demanding to resolve their salary anomalies issue, entered the fifth day severely inconveniencing the commuters.

The cabinet subcommittee appointed to find a solution to the railway employees’ issues is expected to meet today.

Secretary of the Railway Engine Drivers Union Indika Dodangoda said a decision will be taken regarding the strike based on the decision taken by the subcommittee. He said the strike would continue indefinitely if no favorable decision was taken by the subcommittee this afternoon.
