First generator at Lakvijaya power plant to be shut down for maintenance

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – There is no truth in the news that is being circulated these days that the electricity generation activities of the Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant in Puttalam are completely stopped, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Business Development said.

The Ministry said it is planning to temporarily suspend the power generation of the first generator of the Lakvijaya Power Plant for the required maintenance activities.

The total capacity of the Lakvijaya Power Plant in Norochcholai with three generators of 300 MW each is 900 MW. Each of these generators should be turned off for maintenance as per the period of electricity generation.

According to the Permanent Maintenance Periods schedule of the Lakvijaya Power Plant, the maintenance of Category A should be carried out every 04-06 years and Category B 03-04 years, while the maintenance of Category C should be carried out when Category A and B are not under maintenance.

Accordingly, Level A maintenance of the first 300 MW generator was carried out in February 2016 and the level B maintenance is due to be conducted now and it will take about 75 days.

Therefore, the first generator will have to be removed from service in mid-October 2019 and once the maintenance is completed, the first generator will be re-used for normal operation, the Ministry said.

Since the power generation activities of the hydro power plants are being maximized due to the prevailing rainy weather in the island, the first generator of the Lakvijaya power plant is scheduled for maintenance, the Ministry said.
