Rajapaksa Museum case against Gotabhaya and others postponed for next year

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The Special High Court Trial-at-Bar today postponed the hearing of a the case against Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and six others in connection with alleged misappropriation of Rs.33.9 million in public funds during construction of the D.A. Rajapaksa Museum and Memorial in Medamulana until 9th of January 2020.

Since the Supreme Court has issued an interim injunction not to hear the evidence in this case until December 20, the three-member High Court today announced that the hearing of the evidence will not be held today.

The case was taken up before a three judge bench comprising Justices Sampath Abeykoon, Justice Sampath Wijeratne and Justice Champa Janaki Rajaratne.

The seven accused had been charged under Section 5(1) of the Public Property Act and Section 388 of the Penal Code, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and the Public Property Act.

Rajapakse filed an appeal in the Supreme Court challenging the order issued by the three-member High Court on January 11 to reject his preliminary objections and requesting the court to nullify the lower court’s order.

The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s appeal on December 10.
