(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has accepted a letter directed by the General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Akila Viraj Kariyawasam nominating Parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa as the Leader of the Opposition.
The Speaker will make an official announcement of the appointment when Parliament convenes on 03 January, 2020 after a new session is ceremonially declared open by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The decision was reached to convene Parliament once again at 1.00 PM following the President’s inaugural speech in Parliament.
The decision was reached during a meeting with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.
The post will come into effect following the announcement in Parliament that Parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa has been named Leader of the Opposition.
