(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The construction of the largest cricket stadium in Sri Lanka is expected to be completed by 2024, Minister of Information & Communications Technology, Higher Education, Technology and Innovations, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said.
The Minister made this observation while making an inspection tour this morning in the area of Diyagama, Homagama where the stadium is to be built.
This is the largest stadium in Sri Lanka to be built in the Colombo district since 1981. Facilities will be built for Up to 40,000 spectators to watch cricket matches.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Shammi de Silva said the stadium will be built on a 25 acre grounds in accordance with International Cricket Council standards. Sri Lanka Cricket is the main funding source for the construction of the stadium.
With the expansion of the expressway system, the stadium can be reached from anywhere in the country within 2 to 3 hours.
Expressing his views Minister Gunawardena said the stadium will become the largest international stadium for day and night matches. The construction work will commence soon. “The international stadium and a university for sports will be brought into that environment as a dignified response of the national leadership to the political leadership.”
