Traffic Lane Law goes into effect from today

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The Traffic Lane Law which is being implemented to reduce the traffic congestion in Colombo and suburbs and bus priority lanes will be re-introduced from today (14).

The lane law was temporarily suspended in the Western Province during the Coronavirus epidemic.

Police say that the lane law will be enforced with the aim of educating the public for three days from today until the 16th. Police have decided to enforce traffic laws on the instructions of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as a solution to the heavy traffic congestion in Colombo.

The lane control has been operating successfully in the past, but it was not implemented during the curfew imposed to control the spread of coronavirus pandemic. But now that the country has recovered, the police have taken steps to re-enforce the lane rules.

A special program to enforce the lane law would be held from 6 a.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Wednesday (16) in selected roads in the Western Province.

Police said the lane rule will be implemented under the theme of “Let’s Resume – Road Discipline” on the orders and instructions of the Senior DIG in charge of Western Province and Traffic.

SSP Indika Hapugoda, Director of the Traffic Control and Road Safety Division said that the traffic law will be implemented on four main roads in Colombo.

SSP Indika Hapugoda further stated that all police officers have been instructed to take legal action against drivers who do not comply with the traffic rules.
