Sri Lanka claims Rs. 340 million for extinguishing fire on MT New Diamond

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Sri Lanka’s Attorney General has submitted a written claim to the lawyers of the owners of the fire-stricken MT New Diamond to reimburse the costs incurred for extinguishing the fire onboard the ship and related activities.

A claim for an estimated cost of Rs. 340 million incurred by the Sri Lanka Navy, the Air Force, the Coast Guard, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the Colombo Dockyard Company, and the Marine Environment Protection Authority has been submitted to the ship’s owners Yesterday (16).

The Panamanian flagged tanker was travelling from Kuwait to Paradip port in India carrying a cargo of 270,000 tonnes of crude and 1,700 tonnes of diesel when the fire erupted in its boiler room on 03 September.

Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force along with Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard and other stakeholders continuously battled for six days and completely doused the fire on 09 September averting a catastrophic fuel spill.
