Coronavirus update: 697 new COVID-19 cases identified Wednesday, total exceeds 30,000

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – According to Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, 697 new COVID-19 cases were reported so far on Wednesday.

Among the positive cases identified Wednesday are 651 close contacts of the infected from Peliyagoda COVID-19 cluster, 43 infected persons from the prison cluster and three arrived from overseas and currently quarantined including two from Canada and one from Pakistan.

According to the Epidemiology Unit report at 11:25 pm Wednesday, a total of 30,075 COVID-19 cases have been reported and 8,131 patients are being treated at hospitals. Another 584 individuals are currently under investigations in hospitals.

Sri Lanka reported 144 deaths and 21,800 patients including the Chinese tourist, who was the first COVID-19 case detected in the country in January, have fully recovered and been discharged from hospitals.

A total of 941,468 PCR tests have been conducted to detect Covid-19 infected persons from February 18 to December 08, according to the Health Promotion Bureau.
