(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Education Ministry has instructed all islandwide schools to temporarily suspend extracurricular activities in view of the prevailing health situation in the country.
Secretary to the Ministry of Education Prof. Kapila Perera has noted that while schools in all provinces except in the Western Province have been started facing the existing health risks responsibly, in view of the current situation in the country schools should temporarily suspend extra activities.
The Education Secretary has instructed all provincial, zonal, and divisional education authorities, heads of Pirivenas and principals to temporarily suspend all activities such as band performances, concerts and parades except for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities related to the qualitative development of children’s education.
The Secretary of Education pointed out that the attendance of students in the schools that have been started has exceeded 70% and stressed that there will be no ban on conducting school level seminars, discussions, health promotion programs etc. to enhance the education of the children.
The Secretary further stated that the decision was taken by the Ministry of Education in view of the health situation prevailing in the country, following information received that several schools are holding concerts and parades using school children.
