Ranil to be sworn in as an MP on June 23

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara yesterday (June 16) handed over the name of former Prime Minister and party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to the Elections Commissioner for the post of National List Member of Parliament.

According to the UNP General Secretary, all documents were handed over to the Election Commission Wednesday.

The Election Commission will issue an Extraordinary Gazette notification shortly, declaring Wickremesinghe as a Member of Parliament. Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to be sworn in in Parliament on the 23rd.

Mr. Wickremesinghe had been requested by a number of parties to be nominated for the National List seat to fill the gap left by the absence of a strong opposition in Parliament.

He has been a Member of Parliament from 1977 to 2019 and has served as Prime Minister five times. He is an experienced politician who has held a number of powerful ministerial posts.
