(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Education Minister Prof G.L Peiris says the Ministry is considering to reopen Schools with les than 100 students in the Island in the Month of July and teachers are to be vaccinated prior to reopening schools.
In view of the urgent need to reopen schools that have been closed due to the Covid epidemic and with the aim of providing education to all, the Education Ministry hopes to launch a practical program in July to open schools with less than 100 children in full compliance with the full recommendations of the health sector, the Minister said today addressing a media conference held at the Ministry of Education, Battaramulla.
Speaking further the Minister said, during the discussion with the President, he has emphasized that it is mandatory for teachers to be vaccinated first.
It is expected to open 2962 schools including 1439 schools with less than 50 children and 1523 schools with 51-100 children based on health recommendations in July and other schools according to a proper plan.
According to the plan, all teachers, officials and principals will be vaccinated and it will encourage parents to send their children to school.
The Ministry also expects to open 2000 centers throughout the country that will provide internet facilities to children without internet access and to use Mahindodaya laboratories, schools, temples and community centers for this purpose.
District Development Committee Chairmen, Zonal Directors as well as Principals have identified 2096 such centers and it is expected to open such centers on the 5th of July, the Minister said.
