Switzerland to grant Sri Lanka over Rs. 1 billion to implement projects for the welfare of migrant workers

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The government of Sri Lanka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Switzerland on the Implementation of programs to Protect, Promote and Ensure the Rights of Sri Lankan Migrant Workers and Families in Sri Lanka.

Piyankara Jayaratne, State Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Market Diversification and Raoul Imbach, Head of the Swiss Embassy in Sri Lanka signed the agreement at the State Ministry on Tuesday.

The MoU is being implemented by the Swiss Development and Cooperation Agency and the State Ministry of Foreign Employment Promotion and Market Diversification.

According to the MoU, a grant of 4.65 million Swiss Francs (over 1 billion rupees) will be provided to Sri Lanka for the implementation of this project.

Ensuring the rights of migrant workers and their families, empowerment and improving the well-being while ensuring security will also be implemented at the district level under this project.

According to the MoU, the relevant project will be implemented until August 2024.
