(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) –The bold and timely move by the Hon. District Judge, court staff and the members of the Bar at the Mt. Lavinia District Court to start virtual hearings since 01st September, 2021 was appreciated today (14) by Hon. M.U.M. Ali Sabri, President’s Counsel, Minister of Justice by providing them some brand new ICT equipment.
Providing these facilities is an outcome of a recent decision taken by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to identify the requirements of all Courts around the island and to create a database to fulfil those requirements. Under this programme, the officers of the MoJ made special visits to each Court to identify the said requirements.
Under the ‘Phase One’ of the programme, ICT and technical equipment worth Rs. 30 million and office furniture worth Rs. 08 million will be distributed among the Courts and procurement for the ‘Phase Two’ has also been commenced. In addition, a special mechanism has been devised to carry out the minor refurbishments of Court buildings through the support of respective Divisional Secretaries.
Justice Ministry Secretary Priyantha Mayadunne, Additional Secretary Thushara Suraweera, Private Secretary to the Hon. Minister Janaka Ranatunga, Chief Legal Advisor of the Civil Law Reforms Sub-committee Mr. Lasitha Kanuwanaarachchi, Director Reforms Mr. Madhushanka Dissanayake, President of the Mt. Lavinia Bar Association Mr. Jagath Halpandeniya were among the gathering.
