Efforts to preserve traditional “Hoon Lakorn Lek” performances in Thailand

(LANKAPUVATH | THAILAND) – Hoon Lakorn Lek is one of traditional Thai play which once almost disappeared, however, due to the passion of the last showman group back then, the number of the groups began to rise one by one to preserve it, and because most of these shows are held in Khlong Bang Luang Floating Market, it is now defined as one of Thailand’s Learning Museum.

It’s been almost 10 years where Sarawut Chantalawanmarn and his colleagues put their Hoon Lakorn Lek shows for free in the Khlong Bang Luang Floating Market, so all the tourists and whoever finds it interesting can access this rare traditional Thai play up-close.

The group also opened a free class for kids in the Bang Luang canal and its neighborhoods to attend.

Now, some of them have grown up with the love of Hoon Lakorn Lek and then set up their group named “Son of Vayu” to inherit their senior’s will by performing in the area for free every weekend – including performing offsite whether budget the hosts have.

Sarawut admitted some of the kids may grow up and find their path, but as long as few of them still hold their love for the play and decide to inherit it with passion, then Hoon Lakorn Lek will not disappear.
