Thriposha requests farmers to provide maize and soya beans

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Thriposha Company, unable to obtain required amounts of maize, has requested the farmers to supply maize and soya beans if they have any stocks as the production of Thriposha has been severely affected due to the lack of quality stocks of maize.

A spokesman for the company said due to several problems, it is not possible to import stocks of maize of proper quality suitable for the production of Thriposha. Ukraine is one of the countries that has high quality maize.

An import company has previously ordered a stock of quality maize suitable for the production of Thriposha from Ukraine. However, the spokesman for Thriposha said the ship carrying the maize stock had been destroyed due to an attack on a Ukrainian port where it was anchored during the Ukrainian crisis.

In this context, a serious crisis situation has arisen due Sri Lanka not receiving the relevant stock of maize, he said.

The monthly requirement of maize for the production of Thriposha in the country is 1500 metric tons. Accordingly, the daily requirement is around 50 metric tons, the spokesman for Thriposha further stated.

Meanwhile, due to the shortage of maize, another substitute will have to be used for the production of Thriposha in the future, said Dr. Renuka Jayatissa, President of the Nutrition Medical Association.

Thriposha is a nutritional supplement given free for low income pregnant mothers and infants.
