A ship carrying 3500 metric tons of LP gas to arrive in the island today

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – A ship carrying 3500 metric tons of Liquefied Petroleum (LP) gas is scheduled to arrive in the island today after 7 days.

The ship is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka at around 1 pm today, Litro Chairman Vijitha Herath said. Another ship carrying 1500 metric tons of gas is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka next Saturday.

The gas stocks of these two ships are supplied to Sri Lanka by Oman Trading Company. The company supplied gas to Litro under a two year contract but the agreement with them has ended last February.

However, the last two gas tankers received by Sri Lanka under the agreement with the company arrived in Sri Lanka in the last week of April and the first week of May, said Vijitha Herath, Chairman of Litro.

The gas ship which is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka today and the ship that will arrive in Sri Lankan waters on the 4th of next month are scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka without an agreement. A senior spokesman for Litro told Neth News that Oman Trading would not supply any more LP gas to Sri Lanka after the two ships.

Litro also stated that the distribution of the gas brought into the country today will commence from Wednesday (June 01). However, the stocks of gas in the two ships to arrive in the island will be sufficient for only 4 days of the daily requirement of the country, Litro Chairman said.

At present about 37,000 metric tons of gas is required to end the current gas shortage in the country. For that at least 10 gas ships have to be imported. The number of empty domestic gas cylinders has risen to 4 million due to gas shortages, a senior spokesman for Litro said.

Meanwhile, the release of domestic gas cylinders to the local market has been suspended for 7 days as of today.
