(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The government is taking steps to expedite the establishment of a training center targeting employment opportunities in Malaysia for Sri Lankans, Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara said.
High Commissioner of Malaysia to Sri Lanka Ambassador Tan Yang Thai recently met with Minister Nanayakkara at the Ministry of Labor and Foreign Employment and discussed the need to expedite the establishment of a specialized training center targeting Malaysian jobs.
In 2016, when Minister Nanayakkara was the Deputy Minister of Foreign Employment, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the two countries to establish a Malaysian Training Center.
During the discussions, the High Commissioner has agreed to reconsider the agreement and take steps to set up a training center as soon as possible.
The Malaysian High Commissioner said that Malaysia has once again opened its doors to migrant workers after the COVID-19 pandemic, and agreed to the Minister’s request for more employment opportunities in Malaysia for Sri Lankan workers.
The discussion focused on sending more Sri Lankan workers to jobs in the Malaysia manufacturing sector and providing them with the specialized training through the Malaysian Training Center, which is expected to establish soon.
The Malaysian High Commissioner also said that a minimum wage has been introduced for Malaysian workers and that minimum wage could be included in the employment contracts of Sri Lankan migrant workers.
The importance of maintaining a close and continued relationship between the Sri Lankan Department of Labor and the Malaysian High Commission was also highlighted.
