(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung says that violence is not an answer to the current political and economic crises in Sri Lanka and askes the protesters to stage their protests peacefully.
“Violence is not an answer. If you are going to protest, please do so peacefully,” Ambassdor Chung said on Twitter.
She also reminded the military and police to grant peaceful protesters the space and security to do so.
“Chaos and force will not fix the economy or bring the political stability that Sri Lankans need right now,” the Ambassador tweeted.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Colombo warned that the protests are expected to draw large numbers of people and may cause road closures and congestion. Multiple associations and groups have called for protests leading up to and tomorrow, July 09, 2022 and some of the calls to protest are encouraging participants to bring gear in preparation for potential violence.
