(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Priyantha Mayadunne, Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government, said that for the coming year, only essential professionals needed for the public service will be recruited by a committee consisting of senior officials.
This committee operates under the chairmanship of Prime Minister’s Secretary Anura Dissanayake.
Accordingly, this committee will decides for which professions and which areas employees need to be recruited when recruiting to the public service.
The secretary also said the new recruitment will be done after considering the employees currently engaged in government service first.
Accordingly, this committee will make the recommendations on necessary recruitments, retirements and areas requiring new recruitments after such retirements.
With the government taking steps to lower the retirement age to 60 years, around 25,000 government officials in various fields are going to retire by the end of this year.
Accordingly, recruitment is to be done only for essential vacant posts with the aim of continuing the public services on the recommendations of this committee.
Last month, the government has informed the heads of the institutions not to make new recruitments for government institutions.
The secretary said this decision was taken in the hope of reducing the government’s expenses in view of the existing situation.
Accordingly, on the recommendations of the committee appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers, it has been decided to consider only the necessary recruitments for the continuation of essential public services.
