(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal today without further hearing dismissed a writ petition filed by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) requesting the court to issue a writ order to the Ceylon Electricity Board to take steps to provide electricity without cuts during the period of the GCE Advanced Level examination.
This order was given by the bench comprising Justices Sobitha Rajakaruna and Dhammika Ganepola today after considering the relevant petition at length.
The petition filed by the PUCSL stated that although the Ceylon Electricity Board had promised to provide continuous electricity supply without cuts during the GCE A-level examination period, the parents of the students sitting for the examination have complained that the students are facing severe inconvenience due to the electricity cut.
Accordingly, the Public Utilities Commission had requested the Court of Appeal to issue an order to the Ceylon Electricity Board to take measures to provide electricity continuously without interruption during the period of the GCE Advanced Level Examination.
However, the lawyers who appeared for the respondents namely Ceylon Electricity Board and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation stated that the other two members of the Public Utilities Commission have not given their consent to maintain this petition.
The lawyers also requested the court to dismiss the petition as the facts contained in the petition are baseless
After considering the facts presented by both parties, the Court of Appeal announced its decision to dismiss the petition without hearing.
