Sri Lanka Navy arrests 12 Indian fishermen and seizes 2 trawlers in northern waters

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka Navy has arrested 12 Indian fishermen and seized their two trawlers this morning for allegedly breaching the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and illegally fishing in island’s northern waters.

During a special operation conducted this morning the Northern Naval Command has deployed Fast Attack Craft of the 04th Fast Attack Flotilla to chase away a cluster of Indian poaching trawlers, having spotted them engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters off Analaitivu and Kovilan, Jaffna.

During the operation, the Navy held 02 Indian trawlers with 12 Indian fishermen who continued to remain in Sri Lankan waters.

The seized trawlers together with 12 Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai harbor and they will be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for onward legal proceedings, the Navy said.

The Navy continues to conduct regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices of foreign fishing trawlers.
