(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Agriculture decided yesterday(26) to extend the validity period of the vouchers issued for the purchase of fertilizer in this year’s Yala season until the end of December this year.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that this decision was taken considering the requests presented by the farmers’ associations.
At present, there is no need for farmers to purchase fertilizers in several districts. As it is the harvest time of the Yala season in Ampara district and some districts of the North as well as in the North Central Province there is no need to re-fertilize.
But due to the validity period of the currently issued vouchers being two months, those farmers are trying to buy urea and other fertilizers with vouchers.
Considering this fact, the decision to extend the validity period has been taken and therefore the validity period of the vouchers currently issued has been extended until the end of December this year.
Accordingly, the Minister of Agriculture mentions that the farmers can buy the fertilizers they need without a rush.
