(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha says that in the future teachers will not be recruited to colleges of education for a three-year diploma but to a university that will be established with a four-year degree to produce teachers.
The minister mentioned this while participating in a program to educate the principals on the development of education quality in the North-Western province yesterday (11) at the Sudesha theater in Chilaw.
Accordingly, the minister also said that the 19 National Colleges of Education that are currently in existence will be converted into a teacher training university and its related faculties and will be administered under the Ministry of Education with the approval of the University Grants Commission.
He also said that the trainee teachers of this university will not be allowed to establish trade associations like in other universities and the reason for this is because this university produces teachers.
The Minister emphasized here that it is a basic requirement to produce a disciplined group of people from this university and graduate teachers will be produced from this.
Governor of North Western Province Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, Minister of State for Urban Development and Housing Arundika Fernando, MPs Dayasiri Jayasekara, Chinthaka Mayadunna, Ali Sabri Rahim, and a group of officials from the Ministry of Education participated in this event.
