MITRE Corporation of the US Facilitates Sri Lanka CERT to Build a Cyber Security Workforce for Government

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – In line with the implementation of the Cabinet-approved Information and Cyber Security Strategy, the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (Sri Lanka CERT) is taking necessary steps to build askillful cybersecurity workforce for the public sector to protect digital assets from ever-growing cyber-attacks.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, digital transformations have accelerated worldwide, and the government of Sri Lanka has also embraced this trend. As government organizations increasingly rely on digital technologies to access critical data, the susceptibility to cyber threats has surged. Sri Lanka CERT has identified government organizations that maintaincritical national information infrastructure and currently taking measures to enhance their cyber security readiness.

Recognizing the urgent need to take measures to protect organizations maintaining critical national information infrastructure, Sri Lanka CERT has initiated a program to cultivate a skilled workforce in the government.In this context, necessary steps are taken to develop aCyber Security Skills Framework for the government to lay a solid foundation to enhance the capacity of government officers on cyber security.

To achieve this, under the guidance of the US Embassy of Sri Lanka, the MITRE Corporation of the US has provided technical and advisory services to develop the Skills Framework for Government. A series of workshops were conducted over the past week which brought together experts from the public, private, and academic sectors. During these workshops, challenges for building a cyber-security workforce have been discussed andidentified. Further, int he coming months, a series of trainings will be provided for government staff on various aspects of cyber security. Building the capacity of government staff is essential to take the leadership in implementing the Cabinet-approved Information and Cyber Security Policy at government organizations to protect digital infrastructure from various information security threats.

These initiatives demonstrate the commitment of the government to safeguard digital infrastructure and ensure the security and privacy of sensitive data. As the global digital transformation journey continues, establishing a trained cyber security workforce is regarded as a crucial stride in bolstering Sri Lanka’s digital capabilities.
