(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Process has been started to release Single Super Phosphate or SSP Fertilizer in the country as a substitute for Triple Super Phosphate Fertilizer or Mud Fertilizer which is used to provide phosphorus required for paddy cultivation and other crop cultivation.
The single phosphate produced using Eppawala Rock Phosphate is very suitable for paddy and other crops and can be used as a substitute for the Triple Super Phosphate Fertilizer or TSP which is currently imported from foreign countries.
The annual cost of importing TSP fertilizer to Sri Lanka is about 03 billion rupees. Most of these fertilizers are produced in the countries under the Russian Federation, and due to the current war between Ukraine and Russia, there are problems in importing TSP. Therefore, by producing this single superphosphate in this country, the country will be able to save 03 billion rupees.
Four local companies in Sri Lanka have taken the necessary steps to produce locally and the representatives of those companies recently met and discussed with the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera.
The amount of TSP fertilizer required in the country is about 15,000 metric tons. Fertilizer manufacturing companies have the capacity to produce this required amount and currently have nearly 4000 metric tons of Single Super Phosphate fertilizer in stock.
However, the company representatives said that they are able to produce the single super phosphate that the country needs.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, who expressed his opinion, said that the fertilizer can be produced under the full supervision of the Department of Agriculture, and the distribution of fertilizers can be done by state-owned Lanka Fertilizer Company and Commercial Fertilizer Companies
