(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – A. Mohammed Ilyas, an independent candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election, has passed away at the age of 78.
He reportedly died last night (22) while receiving treatment at Puttalam Hospital following a sudden illness.
Ilyas had a long political career, having served as a Member of Parliament during former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s government.
He had submitted his nomination on August 15 for the upcoming election and was contesting the presidential poll for the fourth time, having previously run in 2010, 2015, and 2019.
