(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Chinese Navy’s hospital ship “Peace Ark” has arrived at Colombo Port in Sri Lanka as part of its “Harmony Mission-2024.” This is the ship’s first visit to Sri Lanka in seven years, following its previous visit during the “Harmony Mission” in 2017. The ship will remain in Sri Lanka for seven days, during which it will focus on providing medical services, fostering military collaboration, and promoting cultural exchanges between the two nations.
On its arrival, a formal welcome ceremony was held at the pier. The event was attended by representatives from the Sri Lankan government, members of the armed forces, officials from the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, overseas Chinese community members, and employees of Chinese-funded institutions in the country. The warm reception highlighted the importance of the visit in strengthening the ties between the two countries.
During its stay, the “Peace Ark” will offer free medical services to local citizens, making full use of its advanced medical facilities and professional staff. The ship’s medical team will conduct consultations, treatments, and health education sessions aimed at improving access to healthcare for Sri Lankans. This initiative is part of China’s ongoing efforts to support global humanitarian aid and foster goodwill.
In addition to medical services, the ship will facilitate military medical exchanges. These interactions will provide an opportunity for naval medical personnel from China and Sri Lanka to share expertise, discuss medical strategies, and collaborate on advancing healthcare practices within their respective naval forces. Such exchanges are expected to enhance professional understanding and cooperation between the two nations’ militaries.
The visit also includes a series of cultural and friendship activities aimed at deepening mutual understanding and camaraderie between the personnel of the Chinese and Sri Lankan navies. These activities will range from joint recreational events to collaborative programs designed to highlight shared values and strengthen interpersonal connections.
China and Sri Lanka have a longstanding relationship, having established diplomatic ties on February 7, 1957. Over the decades, their partnership has grown steadily, with a notable upgrade to a strategic partnership in 2013. This relationship is based on principles of mutual assistance and enduring friendship. Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, holds a significant position in the Indian Ocean, south of the South Asian subcontinent. Its location has historically made it an important partner for regional and global cooperation.
