The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) yesterday accused the Education Ministry officials of having deprived more than 200 doctors’ children of their right to education. These children have failed to gain admission to schools in the areas where their parents have been transferred to.
Addressing the media at the OPA, GMOA Secretary Dr. Nalinda Herath said the union had held several discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena, who had brought the situation to the notice of the Education Ministry. However, it was sad to note the Education Ministry had not implemented a presidential order, Dr. Herath said.
The GMOA had also taken up the matter with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Education Minister, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, who had also instructed his officials to do solve the problem.
But, nothing had been by the Education Ministry officials Dr. Herath said. “What we have understood from this whole issue, is that none of the officials at the Education Ministry are willing to carry out the instructions given to them by the government top brass.”
Assistant Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said there were approximately 110 doctors children who were waiting admission to Grade One. While the total number of doctors children without schools was approximately 200. “We are not waiting to our children admitted to top schools, all we ask is that they are given admittance to the country’s national schools, he added.
