(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Rohan Hettiarachchi, the Executive Director of People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL), an election monitoring watchdog in Sri Lanka, says no comment can be made on the date of the Local Government Election, which is very uncertain.
Hettiarachchi made these remarks during a media briefing of the March 12 Movement held today (March 18) at Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Training Institute.
Speaking further Mr. Dissanayake said that there are many positive features in this electoral system, including the stabilization of women’s representation.
Similarly, this electoral system will increase the number of local government representatives by two-fold, which means that the people have to maintain twice the number of representatives.
However, if there is no change in the quality of the candidates, the people will not be benefited by holding local government elections, Hettiarachchi said.
He pointed out that the political parties should reveal to the country whether they have selected the quality candidates before the elections were held.
