(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faizer Mustapha said that he was signing the gazette notification on local government (LG) elections next week. Accordingly, the elections will take place in next January, the Minister said after discussions with the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Minister Faizer Mustapha, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, Sri Lanka Freedom party (SLFP) General Secretary Minister Duminda Dissanayake, United National Party General Secretary Minister Kabir Hashim, Leader of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Minister Rauf Hakeem, leader of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Minister Mano Ganesan and EPDP leader Douglas Devananda took part in the discussion held at the Temple Trees.
The upcoming local government elections, municipal councils, urban councils and Pradeshiya Sabha Acts passed recently were discussed at length at the meeting.
Up Country Tamil parties have brought suggestions on expanding the Nuwara Eliya and Ambagamuwa local government bodies even though there were speculations that this can be used as an excuse to postpone LG elections.
Minister Mustapha however said the voting will take place in January.
