Committee appointed to consider amending Sri Lanka’s divorce law

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has appointed a committee to look into the ways to amend the divorce law of the country.

The Committee is expected to submit proposals within a short period of time.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has considered amending the divorce law to expedite the legal process of divorce as currently cases of divorce take a number of years to finalize a divorce.

Furthermore, women activists say the courts do not take the plight of women filing for divorce seriously and attempt to patch up the marriage. The proceedings can take years because the accused can evade the court or get the hearing postponed on any member of excuses while the petitioner has to be present at every hearing.
