Sri Lanka’s Johann Peiris successfully summits Mount Everest

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Sri Lanka’s Johann Peiris has successfully summited Mount Everest this morning in his second attempt and becomes the second Sri Lankan to summit the world’s highest mountain.

He successfully summited Mount Everest at 5.55 a.m. Nepal time Tuesday (22 May 2018), local media reported.

Johann Peiris now becomes the second Sri Lankan to summit the Mt. Everest after Jayanthi Kuru Utumpala achieved the feat in in 2016.

In 2016, Jayanthi and Johann were the first Sri Lankans to undertake the challenge of summiting Everest but Johann had to return without making to the top due when his oxygen tank failed 400 meters before the summit.

His local team in Colombo has reported that Johann has now begun his descent, which is far more treacherous than the ascent and will take two days to reach the Base Camp, when he will be in communication with his team.
