(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena today opened the renovated Golden Canopy of the historic Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth Relic) in Kandy.
The Golden Canopy was renovated with the allocations made by the Presidential Secretariat under the guidance of the President and on a request from the Chief Prelates of Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters and the Diyawadana Nilame (Custodian).
The 3,450 square feet Golden Canopy was renovated at a cost of Rs. 45 million after 16 years. Former President Ranasinghe Premadasa offered the Golden Canopy to the Temple of the Tooth Relic in 1987.
Following the opening of the Golden Canopy the President engaged in a conversation with the craftsmen who carried out the renovation of the Golden Canopy and praised their work.
Prior to opening of the Golden Canopy this morning, the President paid homage to the Temple of the Tooth Relic and received blessings. Ministers Wijayadasa Rajapaksha, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera and Lakshman Kiriella were present on the occasion.
