Sri Lankan President turns 67 today

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Sri Lanka’s President Maithripala Sirisena celebrates his 67th birthday today.

Multiple religious ceremonies of Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian faiths have been organized island wide to invoke blessings on the President today.

It is a special occasion that the President is turning 67 when the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which he chairs, is also celebrating its 67th anniversary.

Maithripala Sirisena, the sixth Executive President of Sri Lanka, was born on 3rd September 1951 to a middle-class farming family in Western Province and grew up in Polonnaruwa in the North Central Province.

He joined mainstream politics in 1989 as a Member of Parliament and has held several key ministerial portfolios since 1994. He is the President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and was the longest serving General Secretary of the party from 2001 to November 2014.

President Sirisena, who served as the Minister of Health, left the former government in November 2014 to contest the 2015 presidential election as the common candidate against the incumbent president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Following his landmark victory he became the sixth Executive President on January 9, 2015.
