(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –At least 8 persons have died, 11 persons are missing and 21,105 people have been affected due to the adverse weather conditions prevailing in Sri Lanka, according to the latest update from the Disaster Management Center.
Nearly 1900 people of 466 families have been displaced as torrential rains lashed the country for the past two days. According to the DMC report 1295 houses have been partially damaged and 13 houses have been fully damaged while 183 small businesses have sustained damages.
Meanwhile, the landslide warning issued yesterday for the Badulla, Kalutara, Galle, and Kegalle districts is still in effect, the DMC said.
The DMC has issued a Level 3 red alert requiring evacuation for several locations within the Kalutara district. People in the Walallawita, Bulathsinhala, Agalawatta, Mathugama, Baduralia, and Ingiriya Divisional secretariat divisions and surrounding areas have been warned to evacuate if the rains continue since the rainfall within the past 24 hours has exceeded 150 mm.
Level 1 warning has been issued for Badulla, Passara Divisional secretariat divisions and surrounding areas while Level 2 warning has been issued for Haldummulla Divisional secretariat division and surrounding areas.
The Galle District has received heavy rainfall resulting in Gin Ganga reaching the spill level and 10 out of 19 divisional secretariats have been affected by floods. The water level may increase further if the rain continues, the irrigational engineers warned.
About 52 small businesses have been damaged due to this situation and the provision of cooked meals to affected families has already commenced, according to an official of the District Secretariat.
The DMC requested the people living near the Gin and Kalu rivers and Atthanagalu Oya to be alert to the rising water levels.
Deputy Director of the Center, Pradeep Kodippili requested the people to pay attention to the notifications made by the DMC.
