(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –A Fundamental Rights petition filed before Supreme Court challenging Speaker Karu Jayasuirya’s decision to convene parliament while the court has issued an injunction.
Attorney Aruna Laksiri filed the petition in the apex court stating that by convening the parliament while the top court has issued an interim injunction against the gazette notification issued by the President dissolving the parliament, the Speaker has insulted the court.
The petitioner alleges that under the Article 105 of the Constitution, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya is in contempt of court for summoning Parliament while the interim order of the Supreme Court is in effect.
Attorney Laksiri further requests the apex court to declare that the Speaker by his actions has influenced the Supreme Court and penalize the respondent appropriately after an investigation into the petition.
