(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena says he will accept the Supreme Court’s verdict with respect and take future political decisions accordingly in the best interest of the country.
“I look forward to the constitutional interpretation of the Supreme Court, whatever it may be, I will take future political decisions accordingly, to the best interest of our motherland, not to the benefit of any person, group or party,” the President said yesterday.
Speaking at an event held in Polonnaruwa on Sunday (09), the President said he is not happy about the executive powers one individual can have as president and it should be not so in a country where democracy is strong.
He expressed confidence that condition will be changed soon and he will have the opportunity to work with a prime minister and a cabinet soon.
The President further said that in the past few days, as the President of a country where there was no functioning Prime Minister and a Cabinet, he acted with immense responsibility and patience.
Speaking further, the President said the some people are trying to portray the current political crisis as a conflict between the political parties and a personal issue between him and Ranil Wickremesinghe but it is a conflict between national vision and foreign vision.
He further said that when the vision that country should rise on its own independently without letting foreign powers to suppress the nation is implemented, the foreign forces have become a challenge. He added that the people of this country need to understand that and all those who love the country should think about the country when they make decisions.
President Sirisena participated in the event held at the Royal College auditorium in Polonnaruwa to distribute livelihood development equipment for 2018 under the “Awakening Polonnaruwa” District Development Program
The President symbolically distributed the equipment to 4500 beneficiaries under the program implemented at a cost of Rs. 294 million.
Former Chief Minister of the North Central Province Peshala Jayaratne and Polonnaruwa Mayor Chanaka Sidath Ranasinghe were also present.
