(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Island wide restaurants and stores selling food items will be inspected during the National Food Security Week that commenced on Monday.
Island-wide raids will be carried out to detect restaurants serving food that are not suitable for human consumption during the week.
The Ministry of Health has declared a National Food Security Week until the 16th December.
It is a responsibility of health authorities and food handling agencies to ensure that the food consumed by the general public does not cause any harm or disease to the consumer, according to the Health Ministry.
Accordingly, the eateries and food outlets in the Colombo city were inspected yesterday. Steps were taken to seal a number of places which have sold food unsuitable for consumption and to take legal action against the owners of three shops.
Public health inspectors have also seized the stock of expired foods.
