(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHRC) has set 20 March as the day to discuss the report on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, a spokesperson for the Geneva office told The Sunday Morning.
The draft programme of work set last week listed Sri Lanka under item two on the provisional agenda for 20 March.
The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will meet in Geneva for its 40th session from 25 February-22 March, 2019.
Sri Lanka was listed on the agenda for the 40th session after making a commitment to show progress on the human rights issue by this March. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet or the Deputy High Commissioner will submit a report on Sri Lanka during the session.
The report on Sri Lanka by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights will be made public next month and then formally presented to the UNHRC on 20 March and discussed by the Council, a spokesperson for the Geneva office said.
The Sunday Morning learnt that there was already an attempt made to push for a new resolution over Sri Lanka’s slow progress to meet its commitments.
