Education Minister bans practice of collecting money from parents for school activities

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has instructed to take immediate steps to stop collecting money from parents for activities at schools.

The Minister, considering the complaints received from the parents on the practice, has taken this decision at the staff officers� progress review meeting held recently.

The Minister has emphasized that all officials must abide by the provisions of the circular issued by the Ministry of Education regarding the collection of money at schools.

Minister Kariyawasam had stressed that such actions should not take place when steps are being taken to expand the free education.

Steps have also been taken to appoint an officer to receive the complaints from parents on actions such as collection of money. Written complaints can also be lodged with the Ministry of Education.
