(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Special Investigation Unit of Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has arrested 2,522 unscrupulous electricity users during raids conducted island wide last year.
The fines collected from the power pirates exceed Rs. 130 million, the Ministry of Power and Energy and Business Development said. Of the fines, over Rs. 120 million was to cover the losses incurred by the CEB and over Rs. 10 million are court fees.
Sri Lanka’s state owned power monopoly has uncovered 2,269 instances of meter tampering and 253 unauthorized access to electricity using hooks.
Minister Power and Energy and Business Development Ravi Karunanayake says he is committed to strengthen the Special Investigation Unit of the CEB will be strengthened and will provide all assistance necessary to implement legal activities.
