(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has taken steps to deploy trains with special compartments dedicated only for women from today.
The ‘Women Only’ compartments launched from today to coincide with the International Women Day has been implemented as a measure to prevent the sexual harassment and hardship endured by women using public transport.
In the first stage ‘Women Only’ carriages will be included in office trains and will be expanded to other trains as well in the future, the Ministry said.
Accordingly, women’s only compartments will be deployed on the following trains from today
No 525 Train leaving Meerigama Railway station at 6:30 a.m. to Colombo Fort
Train leaving Rambukkana Railway station at 05.57 a.m. to Colombo Fort
Train leaving Maho Railway station at 4.45 am to Colombo Fort
Train leaving Puttalam Railway station at 4.30 am to Mount Lavinia
Samudra Devi train
Train leaving Matara Railway station at 05.00 am for Maradana
