(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has lifted the ban on several social media sites on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The ban was imposed following the Easter Sunday attacks in which over 250 people were killed.
Social media sites Facebook, WhatsApp and Viber were banned while YouTube was also restricted.
The ban was imposed as social media was used to spread misinformation and promote hate following the Easter Sunday attacks.
The President was expected to lift the ban late last week but he said he had changed his mind after misinformation continued to spread on Facebook.
The Government has now warned that stern action will be taken against anyone spreading false news on social media or promoting hate among communities.
