(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The academic activities at several universities remained closed after New Year holidays will commence today (21) and tomorrow (22).
Universities activities were temporarily suspended due to the security situation in the country after the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.
Academic activities at several universities including Sabaragamuwa, Uva Wellassa, Peradeniya, Colombo, Rajarata and Aesthetic studies are to be commenced tomorrow (22).
Vice Chancellor of the Sabaragamuwa University Prof. M. Sunil Shantha said that the students should come to the University with their identity card and their student record book in order to confirm the identity. .
The Vice Chancellor said since a special security program is in effect for the safety of the students, all students should support the security program and they should not come to the University premises with face covering clothes.
Meanwhile, the academic activities of the Faculty of Arts, Commerce, and Dental Sciences of the University of Peradeniya will also be commenced Tuesday (22).
The Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences, and Medical faculties and also the first and final year students of the Veterinary Faculty will commence academic activities today (21).
The Peradeniya University has informed that the first year students of the Faculty of Engineering and the second year students of the Faculty of Computer Science will commence academic activities today.
Vice Chancellor of the Uva Wellassa University, Prof. Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera said that academic activities will commence tomorrow under a special security program. Accordingly, all students should report to hostels this morning (21).
The Vice Chancellor of the Rajarata University, Dr. BA Karunaratne, said the University will be opened on the 23rd for the students of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities to take exams. The authorities have informed all resident students to come to the hostels today.
The University of the Visual and Performing Arts at Colombo will also open today, Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor Sarath Chandrajeewa said. Several security committees consisting of students and faculty have been appointed to strengthen the security, the Vice Chancellor said.
The Vice Chancellor said the security forces have conducted several operations inside the university premises and in surrounding areas and affirmed security.
Meanwhile, the academic activities of the Kelaniya University Medical Faculty commenced on the 17th, but no decision has been taken on opening of other faculties, the deputy vice-chancellor said. Most probably, academic activities of all faculties will commence next week, he said.
