(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The government of Sri Lanka Wednesday signed an agreement with the government of Japan enabling Sri Lanka to send an unlimited number of skilled workers to Japan for employment under 14 categories for a period of 10 years.
Sri Lanka’s Minister of Telecommunications, Foreign Employment and Sports, Harin Fernando today signed the “Memorandum of Cooperation on a “Basic Framework for Proper Operation of the System pertaining to Foreign Human Resources with the Status of Residence of “Specified Skilled Worker” between the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan and the National Police Agency, and the Ministry of Telecommunication, Foreign Employment and Sports of Sri Lanka.
The purpose of the Memorandum of Cooperation is to establish a basic framework for information partnership in order to ensure smooth and proper sending and accepting specified skilled workers, in particular the elimination of malicious intermediary organizations, and to resolve the problems of sending, accepting and residing in Japan of specified skilled worker, the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Japan stated.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs enhances the mutual benefits of both countries through cooperation for proper operation of the system, cooperating with the relevant ministries and agencies of Japan.
Sri Lanka was among the nine countries given the opportunity to send skilled workers to Japan and as a result of the agreement skilled workers in 14 categories will be able to obtain unlimited employment opportunities in that country.
Accordingly, those in the health care, building cleaning management, machine parts and tooling industries, industrial machinery industry, electric/electronic and information industry, construction industry, shipbuilding and ship machinery industry, automobile and repair maintenance, aviation industry, accommodation industry, agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture, manufacture of food and beverages and food service industry will be able to find employment in Japan.
